Amboseli National Park Information

This park is located next to the Kilimanjaro some 260km south west of Nairobi city along the border of Kenya and Tanzania. The Amboseli is a 390 sq km of protected land which is home to hundreds of animals, lake and the colourful Masai people. The Amboseli national park has represented the real picture of an authentic African safari with the signature post card picture of elephants feeding in front of the Kilimanjaro.

Amboseli park is named after the Masai word ‘empusel’ which means a place of salty dust. The Amboseli is a very dry patch of land with loose volcanic soil that forms tens of whirl winds swirling into the sky as they move at high speed across the grassland and the usually dry lake Amboseli.

The Amboseli is nevertheless, a refuge for animals in the dry seasons as it gets a permanent feed of water from the melted ice caps of Kilimanjaro. The park has permanent cool and fresh water ponds that are fed from Kilimanjaro. This means you will find a lot of animals in the park in the dry season as this is the last place where there is water for miles around.

One Day Tours Amboseli Park

Amboseli one day tours start from Nairobi at 6:00am and arrive in the park by 10:00am to start the game drive. The day tours are arranged as joining tours that you can join as a single traveller or as a private package for a family. You will arrive at the park and most likely will have seen the mountain peak from miles away. The views of Kilimanjaro are best seen from Amboseli.

You will be amazed at the number of elephants and how close they can come to your game drive vehicle. They are just too accustomed to the tour vans but they number more than 1200 of them. They can be seen wallowing in the water or eating the water grass while immersed in the water.
